How do you properly do a shoulder stand in yoga?
DD asked:
I am taking a beginner’s yoga class at my college and I am finding it nearly impossible to get myself into a shoulder stand. I’ve been trying to practice at home to no avail. I’m a little more out of shape than I initially thought, because apparently I’m completely lacking core and upper body strength. Any suggestions to help me get into a shoulder stand without killing myself?

try some padding such as a blanket under your neck; do it against a wall first; support with your arms as shown in the picture
I am assuming you do not mean the inverted peacock pose.
That one is tough.

Hopefully, the instructor of your class can give help you with tips on how to practice Shoulder Stand.
In addition to that, perhaps the instruction guidelines at yogajournal will help:
Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar) are a great way to develop asana-applicable core and upper body strength.
Traditional Sun Salutations do include Chaturanga Dandasana (Four limbed staff pose, also sometimes referred to as a yoga push-up), a pose many find bit challenging.
There are ways to modify Chaturanga to make it a bit easier until you develop the necessary strength to practice it with ease.
Again, perhaps your instructor can offer you some tips.
Namaste’,
