How do I follow an Ayurveda diet?

Kathleen Comber asked:

I seem to be a mix of vata and kapha. But the recommended diets for balancing the two are opposite. Any ideas?

Yes. People who are mix of vata and kapha do well with warming foods. You’re going to want to make sure you get plenty of good fats in your diet so you don’t aggrivate the kapha. The vata side, if it’s the dominant one, should be the primary guide to your diet. You wanna make sure you don’t let the vata spin out of control or it can actually cause problems that appear to be kapha on the surface. If the kapha is the dominant, make sure you get more exercise and avoid too much rich dairy. Either way, things like unrefined coconut oil will pacify the vata and not aggravate the kapha. Warming and pungent herbs and spices will be ok for you, like ginger or thyme.
Depak Chopra wrote a good book on this called “Perfect Health” that is a great tool for understanding how to balance it.
